According to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), August steel imports total 2 million net tons (NT), of which 1.783 million NT are finished steel. These imports are down 34% and 3.4%, respectively, compared to July’s data. Steel imports for the first eight months of 2019 totaled at 20.668 million NT, of which 15.321 NT were finished steel (Down 13.6% and 15.9%, respectively, for same period in 2018).
Finished steel market share was estimated to be 19% in August, and is gauged at 20% over the first eight months of 2019. A notable finished steel product is hot rolled sheets. Imports for this product increased in august by 10%, according to AISI. In addition, hot dipped galvanized sheets and strips have decreased 3% between July and August, and cold rolled sheets have increased 6.5%.
For the month of August, the largest imports came from South Korea (263,000 NT, up 46% from July), Japan (134,000 NT, up 54%), Germany (75,000 NT, down 1%), Taiwan (61,000 NT, down 28%), and Spain (56,000 NT, up 47%).
