What is it?

Slag is a by-product of the steel-making process (it is a residual product of the smelting process). Slags are mostly used to remove waste in the smelting process, but also serve other purposes, such as helping control the temperature during smelting, and reducing the levels of re-oxidation while the metal is still in its liquid form.
