Based on an AISI report for the last week in August 2019, domestic raw steel production was 1.85 million net tons (NT) with a capability utilization rate of 79.5%. Similarly, for the same period last year, production was 1.86 million NT, while capability utilization was 79.4%. The current production rate, therefore, represents a 0.6% decrease in production. Week to week, production of raw steel had decreased 1.4% – Data for the week ending August 24, 2019 shows production was at 1.877 million NT and capability utilization rate was at 80.6%.
Based on AISI data, adjusted year-to-date production through August 2019 was 65.3 million NT, with a capability utilization rate of 80.8%. This output represents a 4.1% increase from same period last year (reported production of 62.72 million NT and capability utilization rate of 77.3%)
Raw steel production for the week ending August 31, 2019, per district:
- Southern District: 699,000 NT
- Great Lakes District: 673,000 NT
- Northeast District: 209,000 NT
- Midwest District: 198,000 NT
- Western District: 71,000 NT
